Not many responses to last week’s poll. But here is how you answered last week question:
What did you spend more time watching last weekend?
NFL Draft: 87% (7)
NBA Playoffs: 12% (1)
Baseball Games: 0% (0)
other: 0% (0)
Total Votes : 8
Teenager Michelle Wie will be the first woman in over 60 years to play in the third round of a PGA men’s tournament. Some people have asked whether it’s right to allow a woman to play in the PGA. After all, no one would ask if men could play in the LPGA.
The reason men aren’t allowed to play in the LPGA is that it would be completely unfair. Michelle Wie is an exception because it is VERY hard for a woman to compete against men of similar ability in golf. Typically, men drive the ball farther than a woman can even think about driving it. If Michelle Wie can compete at a level that is harder than what is expected from her, then more power to her. If a man who can’t cut it in the PGA wants to go compete against the ladies… well, I think we can all see what’s wrong with that.
Now that the 2006 NFL Draft is over, let’s take a quick look at what’s going on in the NBA Playoffs. Before we do I wanted to warn you that I haven’t been paying too much attention to the NBA this year. My Houston Rockets ran into a lot of injuries so I didn’t pay much attention to the NBA.
I was just looking at the scores of tonights games:
Indiana lost to New Jersey 92 to 86 (NJ Nets lead series 3-2)
The Miami Heat beat the Chicago Bulls 92 to 78 (Heat lead series 3-2)
San Antonio scored 109 points to Sacramentos 98 (Spurs lead series 3-2)
And lastly the Lakers are losing pretty badly to the Phoenix Suns.
I think the Nets, Lakers, Heat and Spurs will all move on. The LA Clippers and Dallas Mavericks have already moved on to the second round. Dallas looks really good. I would not be surprised if this is the Mavericks year to make it to the finals.
My guess is that they will be playing Detroit who right now lead their series against Milwakee. The Miami Heat might turn it on and beat Detroit. Unless the Heat take their play up a notch and take out the Pistons I think that Detroit will win it all this year.
So who do I think will play in the finals either:
Detroit vs. Dallas
or
Detroit vs. LA Clippers
If I have to choose, let me go out on a limb and say that the Detroit Pistons will win the championship series in 7 games against the LA Clippers.
Keep in mind I haven’t been watching many NBA games this year, so I am probably way off base with my predictions.
The US 2006 World Cup team was announced today. There were a couple of surprises on the roster, including a player chosen from the Houston Dynamo.
You can read the details about the US Soccer teams roster in this Houston Chronicle article.
Last night the LA CLippers made it to the second round of the NBA playoffs. This is the first time the Clippers have made it to the second round of the playoffs since 1976. Pretty cool.
The Clippers could make it to the NBA finals. They have a very well balanced team, with solid players at every position. I really like their chances this year.
The Sporting News were allowed an exclusive behind the scenes look into the Houston Texans draft process. I kind of doubt they knew at the time how interesting this would be. Anyway, it is real interesting to read how the whole process worked out. It answers the question:
“Why did the Texans choose Mario Williams over Reggie Bush?”

I found this interesting so I thought I would pass it long. Denzel Washington’s son who wasn’t selected in the NFL draft signed with the St. Louis Rams. He had some nice stats in college. His name is John David Washington, and he is a 5-10, 200 pound running back from the Division II Morehouse College.
It should be fun to follow his story. You can read more about his signing here.
Many people in the media and fans around Houston are saying “What were the Texans thinking?”
The Texans picked Mario Williams for a number of reasons:
1. He has freakish size and speed (talent galore).
2. He plays every down (Reggie Bush is not an every down back)
3. Great Defensive ends are harder to come by than running backs
4. The Texans needed help at that position more than they needed a running back
The Texans could certainly be proved wrong. But I think both Mario Williams and Reggie Bush will have great carreers in the NFL. In my opinion this wasn’t really a bad pick at all.
One other interesting note is how often running backs drafted later in the draft turn out to be more productive than backs drafted early. For instance, last year Cadillac Williams was much more productive than Ronnie Brown (taken second overall). This year Laurence Maroney or Lendale White may take that honor. I think Lendale White may have an awesome rookie season in Tennessee. As for Laurence Maroney taken by the Patriots late in the first round, here is what Denver head coach Mike Shanahan had to say about him (from this cnnsi article):
“I loved him,” Shanahan said. “I think the Patriots got a steal. An absolute steal. I think he’s going to be the best back in the league.”
Anyway, I do expect Reggie to do well this year and the Texans will be a much better team this year as well. A few other teams that I think had great drafts:
1. Tennessee – Getting Vince Young and Lendale White is great for the future of this offense.
2. Denver – the trade for Javon Walker was brilliant.
3. Philadelphia – Building up the lines – the perfect road to success
4. NY Jets – O-line went from weakness to major strength
The draft was loaded with talent this year, most teams were able to fill some of their needs with solid draft picks this year.
I just added a new poll. What did you spend more time watching last weekend the NFL Draft, NBA Playoffs, Baseball Games, something else?
Let us know by voting now.
Here are the results of my pre NFL Draft poll:
Who do you think the Texans should take with the first pick in the draft?
Reggie Bush: 39% (7)
Vince Young: 56% (10)
Matt Leinart: 0% (0)
Mario Williams: 6% (1)
D’Brickashaw Ferguson: 0% (0)
Trade the Pick: 0% (0)
other: 0% (0)
Total Votes : 18
I personally would have taken Vince Young, but taking Mario Williams was a good pick, despite the public and media backlash. More on that soon…
